Dentistry for Kids
If you thought you were nervous about going to the dentist, try putting yourself in your child's shoes for a moment. While we as adults know realistically the value of regular dental checkups, kids can be particularly afraid of coming to see us. The fact is, our little ones learn a lot of major cues from us, and if we show fear of the dentist, our kids can quickly pick up on that.
That's why it's so important to get kids started early on good dental health and reassuring them that going to the dentist doesn't have to be scary. The gentle and kind dental staff here at Wendy Sanger DMD Cosmetic + Family Dentistry make it our goal to keep children happy and calm at their dental appointments, giving you one less thing to worry about when raising happy children with healthy mouths.
What to Expect When You Take Your Kids to A Dentist
When you take your kids to a dentist, you're not getting some watered-down quality of care. The care we give your children is the same quality of care that we would give you, but we're bundling it up in a gentle package and presenting it to your child in a non-threatening, friendly manner. We undergo advanced training to make this appointment as smooth and easy as possible for you and your child.
When you take your kids to our office, you can be assured that you'll get the following from us:
||A Safe and Comfortable Office. Whether you have a just-starting-to-walk toddler or an energetic pre-teen, we will go out of our way to keep your child feeling safe and at ease in our office. Going to the dentist can be terrifying to children who do not know what to expect, but at our office, we go out of our way to keep your child feeling secure and happy.
||Clear Communication for Little Ears. Adults tend to have a good idea of what is going to happen when they go to the dentist. We know that we may require x-rays, or that our dentist may use a loud, mechanical toothbrush to polish our teeth. Kids do not automatically understand these things, which is why we take the time to carefully and clearly explain every single thing we are going to do to help take care of their smile.
||Specialized Dental Care for Your Child. Children's dentists take extra coursework - around two to three years of extra schooling - to ensure that we are giving your child the best quality care dental care that is tailored to their age. We truly care about your child, which is why we go above and beyond to make sure that they develop a lasting relationship with us to help prevent any barriers that may make them resistant about seeing us.
Just because your child's permanent teeth haven't grown, it doesn't mean that you shouldn't get an early start on establishing good dental health care habits. Gum disease doesn't require teeth to progress to an advanced stage, and with many kids drinking juices and milk from bottles, even kids who aren't eating solids can be at risk for tooth decay.
Having good oral health is extremely important for developing a healthy mouth as your child continues to grow. Having a healthy smile isn't just important for big, happy grins; neglecting your teeth as a child can impair learning how to eat properly and may even change the shape of your face as your teeth and jaw develop.
Taking time to talk to your child and letting them know what to expect in a friendly, open manner will help dispel any fears they may have about seeing us. Letting them know that we may take x-rays or clean their teeth, and giving them a chance to ask questions, will put any fears they have at ease.
