The Value of a Dental Exam

Our office recommends having dental exams with a cleaning every six months. This allows us to stay one step ahead of any problems you may have developed since your last appointment and put a stop to them before they become a bigger issue.
•  Initial inspection: This is the first thing we will do during your dental exam. We will take your medical history and ask questions about any changes to your oral health since we saw you last. If you have any concerns or questions, this is an excellent time to bring them up. Next, we will carefully look inside your mouth to see if there are any issues that need addressing. We will check to see if you have gum disease (looking for things like swollen gums or receding gums and bleeding) as well as look for other things that you may not be aware of (such as oral cancer).
•  X-rays: Depending on how long it has been since we have seen you last, or your medical history or chief complaint (the reason why you are here), we may do x-rays. We typically like to wait no longer than every couple years for x-rays, but do not worry, the amount of radiation exposure you will encounter is completely nominal and less than what you would get from a normal day of exposure to radiation from the sun. We will get x-rays of your four bitewings, which will let us know if you have any tooth decay on your back teeth.
•  Dental cleaning: Once we feel as though we have a good understanding of your current oral health, we will move forward with a dental cleaning. This includes scaling your teeth (removing all plaque and tartar) and polishing your teeth with a special gritty toothpaste and a motorized toothbrush. If we saw the early stages of tooth decay during your x-rays, we may do a fluoride treatment to help protect your teeth from cavities.
•  Consultation: The end of your dental exam is where we discuss with you anything we may have encountered during the earlier parts of your exam. For instance, anything we saw that might have been concerning will be mentioned to you during the consultation. If there is anything that requires further treatment (such as gum disease or any other procedures), we will go over those options with you during this time. If you thought of any other questions for us during your exam, please feel free to bring them up during the consultation.
